“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. And here’s why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.” – Matthew 25:34-36

I begin every new year with my journal.

And at the top of the page, I write: “Chapter 1 – Day 1 – January 1”.

Chapter 1, the beginning. The opportunity for a blank 365-day slate.

But this year, social media was blowing up with “encouragement” and “motivation”. DO MORE. BE MORE. STRIVE MORE. LIVE MORE. SUCCEED MORE. MORE MORE MORE.

It’s so easy to be bombarded with these “motivating” messages and slip into immediate despair. Instead of starting the new year with a deep breath and hopeful expectancy, the world is yelling, “GET OUT YOUR PLANNER! WHY HAVEN’T YOU PLOTTED OUT YOUR COURSE YET? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS? WHY DON’T YOU HAVE GOALS OUTLINED ALREADY?!”

It’s exhausting. Rather than living peacefully and mindfully, we end up on the slippery slope of expectation and falling short of our unrealistic goals. Oh, maybe that’s just me…

But before I get discouraged over another Instagram post about the perfect, Pinterest-worthy wardrobe or the top 5,000 things I should be doing TODAY to be successful by 30…

I’m drawn back to that still, small voice that calls me to breathe. Trust the process. Be proud of how far I’ve come in life, and let my journey be my own.

To risk everything.

To jump in and trust you’re going in the right direction…even if you aren’t doing those top 5,000 things…it’s actually okay. It’s actually just a big wall of distraction and noise that we lose our focus trying to climb over or shout louder.

What’s REALLY important to you?

Who are you blessing today by being a helping hand or a compassionate heart?

What un-social-media-worthy task are you getting done today because it needs to happen…laundry, dishes, organizing your home and decluttering…in order to feel more at peace with your environment?

Who needs your smile today?

How long can you go without your phone this weekend in order to actually connect with your friends and family #IRL?

My 2018 goal is to stop putting so much pressure on myself to be something. I’m working on trusting the process. And letting God move me where He needs me to go. I want to leave all the striving and stressing in the past where it belongs.

Jesus is calling us to deeper things today. Things that will actually, genuinely, and authentically change the world. Turn off the noise and be still.

You might discover something brand new about yourself and your purpose in the process.
