His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. “We are your slaves,” they said. But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God?  You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” – Genesis 50:18-20

Do you ever feel like God is trying to teach you the same lesson – over and over again? And each time feels like it’s the first time? The fear, confusion, doubt, uncertainty…all of the human emotions that grip your heart and mind, trying to throw you off track…just as you thought you had a handle on this “peace that passes all understanding” thing! 25017_Wandering

Divine Intention vs Human Intention. That’s what I’ve been grappling with lately.

In Joseph’s story from the book of Genesis, he had to overcome some very overwhelming odds. He endured his brothers selling him into slavery because of jealousy- and that was AFTER they had attempted to murder him. Then, he found himself in a foreign land, as a slave to some very powerful people. JUST when things seemed to be looking up, a misunderstanding gets him thrown into prison. But because he was faithful and unshakable, God continued to bless him…until he eventually BECAME one of the most powerful rulers in the foreign kingdom he was once a slave to!

And it wasn’t until years later that he could see the bigger picture…that he was going to be used to save lives in the position God had intended for him. Had he stayed in his own land, surrounded by his comfortable world and family and friends, nothing ever changing, no hardships to endure, he would have lived his normal life in normal circumstances and normal routines.

But God’s intention was so much bigger than Joseph’s intentions. God’s plan was much greater than his brothers’ intentions. It went above and beyond the human mind’s imagination and plans…both good and bad!

Do you feel like you were offered a glimpse of God’s intention for your life…a promise whispered in your conversations with Him, a word spoken through the Holy Spirit, or that tugging on your heart…but at the place you’re in right now, in this very moment, you honestly cannot see the way? You have no idea how this promise will come to be…at least not by human intentions? Heck, Joseph was given VISIONS earlier on about how his life would go. But it wasn’t until he had endured many years of hardships and uncertainty that he finally saw the visions becoming reality.

I don’t have all the answers, and I certainly don’t have this mastered, but I know that pressing in to God and seeking Him for the answers…for the clearer path…trusting His timing and His plan is the only way we can really have peace about the Divine Intention on our lives. Even when everything seems to be falling apart, when we have no one to turn to, when we feel utterly alone and lost and the world seems to be against us…He’s working. He’s leaving no stone unturned, no part of the story unfinished or unredeemed. He loves us THAT much that He cares about every little detail of our lives…even the pieces we don’t see or don’t think about as important.

We’re a long way off from understanding His Divine Intention. But we can rest in the knowledge that God’s got it all under control…and it will be BETTER than we can even imagine in the end. That’s a promise I’m clinging to with everything I’ve got.
